Woman in custody in connection to fatal hit and run
CTV Calgary Staff,
A man is dead after he was hit by an SUV while crossing 17 Avenue in southeast Calgary and police say alcohol is suspected as a factor in the fatal crash.
Police were called out to the 3100 block of 17 Avenue S.E. at about 2:30 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
Two people were crossing the road along 17th Avenue when one of them was hit. It is beleived that they were in a crosswalk at the time.
A 26-year-old man was found deceased at the scene and police say the offending vehicle fled the area before they arrived.
Police say that a Ford Escape continued eastbound after stopping briefly at the scene and was found abandoned a short distance away.
"It's my understanding that the vehicle drove eastbound on 17 Ave. and then took a south shot to one of the roads. To what road it is, I honestly don't know off the top of my head. But, like I said, we do have that scene, we do have that vehicle and that just forms one part of the investigation tonight," said Sgt. Colin Foster with the CPS Traffic Unit.
The vehicle was registered to an address in Chestermere and police say a 40-year-old woman was taken into custody when she returned home at about 4:30 a.m.
"We have secured the vehicle and we have arrested a female at the registered owner's address and she's currently being interviewed in relation to tonight's collision," said Foster.
Police say alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash and charges are pending.
