Founded in 1996 in memory of Tarek Assi, YASA (Youth Association for Social Awareness) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting public safety and preventing injuries.

Through partnerships with government bodies, institutions, and the media, YASA raises awareness on road safety, fire prevention, and other public safety issues.

With operations in Lebanon and internationally, YASA actively participates in safety campaigns and advocates for stronger safety laws to reduce accidents and save lives.

The Founder

Ziad Mikhael Akl is a passionate Lebanese lawyer and a dedicated advocate for road safety. He is the founder of the Youth Association for Social Awareness (YASA), a non-governmental organization established in 1996 with the goal of promoting road safety and injury prevention both in Lebanon and globally.

Ziad’s journey in road safety advocacy began in 1994, after a tragic event that deeply impacted him—the death of a 19-year-old university student, Tarek Assi. This tragedy ignited Ziad’s mission to raise awareness and work towards preventing road accidents. Through YASA, he has spearheaded numerous initiatives and campaigns to educate the public on the importance of safe driving and traffic laws.

In addition to his work with YASA, Ziad has actively contributed to international forums and events that focus on road safety and public health. He has authored books and written extensively on topics related to road safety, injury prevention, and advocacy.
Ziad holds multiple master’s degrees in Comparative Law, International Affairs and Diplomacy, and Public Health, and earned a Ph.D. in Health Sciences. He is a member of the Beirut Bar Association, practicing law, while also engaging in a variety of international legal associations.

Through his unwavering commitment, Ziad Akl continues to lead the charge for safer roads, aiming to reduce accidents and save lives around the world.
